April Safety Tips

Spring Cleaning: April is a popular time for spring cleaning, which often involves de-cluttering and reorganizing your home. This is a good opportunity to assess potential hazards, i.e. broken toys, breakable items that can be reached, cleaning items that should be up and out of the way, etc and make sure your home is safe for young children.

Seasonal Changes: As the weather gets warmer, children may spend more time playing outside or exploring new areas of the house. This can increase the risk of accidents or injuries, making it especially important to childproof in and around your home during this time.  For little ones: Outside, make sure any containers that have accumulated water are emptied, and broken items in the yard are discarded.  Locks around the pool are not broken.  All items around the pool fence that can be climbable are removed.  Gate locks are working.  For older children go over the safety rules with them.

Earth Day: Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22nd, is a good opportunity to teach children about the importance of protecting the environment and to use eco-friendly and child-safe cleaning products as part of childproofing your home.

Pool Safety: As the weather gets warmer, families may start spending more time in their backyard swimming pool. This increases the risk of accidents or drownings, especially for young children who are not yet strong swimmers. Installing a pool fence in April, before swimming season is in full swing, can help prevent accidents and provide a safe environment for children.

Overall, April is a good month for childproofing because it provides an opportunity to assess potential hazards in your home and make changes to ensure the safety of young children. Whether you are starting from scratch or just making small adjustments, childproofing your home can help give you peace of mind and keep your children safe.

Spring into Childproofing

Spring is a season of new beginnings and often brings about a renewed sense of energy and excitement, especially for children. However, it is also important to take certain precautions to childproof the environment and ensure the safety of young children during this season.

Here are some tips for childproofing during spring:

Secure outdoor play areas: With warmer weather, children are often eager to spend more time outside. Make sure any outdoor play areas, such as swings, slides, and trampolines, are secure and in good condition to prevent accidents.

Be cautious with open windows and doors: Spring weather often calls for open windows and doors to let in fresh air, but it is important to make sure that young children cannot easily access them. Consider installing window and door locks or guards to prevent accidents.  Windows should not open more than 4".

Keep cleaning supplies out of reach: Spring is a popular time for deep cleaning and organizing, but many household cleaning supplies can be toxic if ingested. Keep all cleaning supplies up and out of reach of young children in a locked cabinet.

Check for allergens: Spring allergies can be especially difficult for young children. Keep an eye on pollen levels and keep windows and doors closed during high pollen days. Additionally, make sure to clean and dust regularly to minimize allergens in the home.

Monitor outdoor activities: As children spend more time outside, it is important to supervise their activities and make sure they are safe. This includes monitoring outdoor play, bike riding, and any other outdoor activities.

KidCo sells an adjustable reflective baby safety vest. When worn, a toddler can be seen playing outside during the day and at night. It's pullover design makes it easy to take on and off. It has an elastic waistband and is machine washable.

4/3- 4/9 National Window Safety Week

National Window Safety Week is a week-long observance that takes place every April to promote the importance of window safety in homes, especially with young children. During this week, various organizations, such as the National Safety Council and the Window Safety Task Force, focus on educating homeowners about the potential dangers of windows and how to prevent accidents.

Childproofing is a crucial step that parents and caregivers can take to ensure the safety of young children in the home. This includes taking steps to prevent falls from windows, which can be a significant risk for children. Some tips for childproofing windows include:

1) Install window guards or window stops: Window guards are designed to prevent children from falling out of windows, while window stops limit how far a window can be opened. Both of these options can help prevent accidents.  Windows should not open more than 4".

2) Keep furniture away from windows: Children may climb on furniture near windows, which can increase the risk of falls. Keep furniture away from windows to prevent accidents.

3) Keep windows locked: Make sure that windows are locked when they are not in use to prevent children from opening them.

4) Educate children about window safety: Teach children about the potential dangers of windows and the importance of not playing near them.

By taking these steps and being aware of window safety, parents and caregivers can help prevent accidents and keep children safe in the home. National Window Safety Week serves as an important reminder to prioritize window safety and take proactive steps to prevent accidents.
