THE ABC'S OF WATER SAFETY

A - ALWAYS ADULT SUPERVISION

                       Always have an ADULT watching the pool.  The Water Watcher does not take their eyes off the water.  The Water Watcher does not talk on the phone.  The Water Watcher does not let things distract them.  The Water Watcher wears something different so everyone knows they are the Water Watcher and will not distract them.  The Water Watcher knows how to swim or has the tools next to them and knows how to use them if someone is in trouble: pool noodle, shepherds hook, life saver, etc. 

B - BARRIER

                        ALL pools should have several layers of protection.  A POOL FENCE is one of those necessary layers.  If you do not have children at home your neighbors might.  Talk to the experts. First responders will tell you to NEVER take your pool fence down.  There are different types of fences out there but one thing is in common they have a self-closing/self-latching gate and 5' is always the safest.

C - CLASSES

                          Children needs swim lessons.  This should be done yearly for their first few years. Many forget the skill over the winter.  ADULTS that do not know how to swim should take swim lessons also.  ADULTS should take CPR lessons.

                       

Yes, this is Drowning season in Arizona.   We can be part of the solution.  Don’t assume someone else is watching the pool.  Be pro-active and make sure that the ABC’s of Pool Safety are being followed.  Make sure there is a Water Watcher.  Don’t care if people think you are being “over protective”.  You will save a life…..it could be the life of your own child or grandchild.

National Water Safety Month

National Water Safety Month is observed every May in the United States to promote awareness about water safety and to prevent drowning accidents. 

Water safety is important for everyone, regardless of age or swimming ability. Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children, and it can happen quickly and silently, even in shallow water.

Here are some tips for staying safe in and around water:

Learn to swim: Take swimming lessons to improve your swimming ability and confidence in the water.

Use life jackets: Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or participating in water activities.

Supervise children: Always supervise children when they are in or near the water, and never leave them unattended.

Know CPR: Learn CPR in case of an emergency.

Preeclampsia Awareness Month

It's getting hot and we know the pool is calling your name. While it is exciting to get summer started and have some fun in the sun, it is also important to remember your family's safety outside around water.  The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day” to "encourage sun safety awareness and to remind everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors." 

This month's safety BLOG focuses on how to be safe with your family around water. Within it, you will find some helpful tips from the International Swimming Hall of Fame, as well as a printable safety flyer about the ABCDs of Water Safety from Arizona Childproofers.  As always last month's product safety RECALLS are at the bottom.

National Water Safety Month is an annual awareness campaign coordinated by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance with support from the National Recreation & Parks Association, the American Red Cross and the World Waterpark Association. Please always be aware and cautious around water, no matter the age!

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, "Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of the summer season, and many families will soon be heading to the beach. Sadly, it’s also the time when many children drown: An estimated 1,000 children fatally drowned in a single year in the U.S., most of them between May and August. In addition, more than 7,000 children are taken to the Emergency Room each year because of a drowning scare."

•  Teach children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible. 
• Always brief babysitters on water safety, emphasizing the need for constant supervision.
• Appoint a designated watcher to monitor children during social gatherings at or near pools.
• Equip doors and windows that exit to a pool area with alarms.
• Post CPR instructions and learn the procedures.
• Keep rescue equipment poolside. Don’t wait for the paramedics to arrive because you will lose valuable lifesaving seconds. Fort to six minutes without oxygen can cause permanent brain damage or death.
• Keep a first aid kit at poolside.
• Install four-sided isolation fencing, at least five feet high, equipped with self-closing and self-latching gates, that completely surrounds the pool and prevents direct access from the house and yard. 
•  Maintain constant visual contact with children in a pool or pool area. If a child is missing, check the pool first; seconds count in preventing death or disability.
•  Don’t use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. Never allow a young child in a pool without an adult.
•  Don’t leave objects such as toys that might attract a child in the pool and pool area.
•  Never prop the gate to a pool area open. 
• Don’t rely on swimming lessons, life preservers or other equipment to make a child “water safe.”
• Never assume someone else is watching a child in a pool area.
• Don’t leave chairs or other items of furniture where a child could use them to climb into a fenced pool area.
• Don’t think you’ll hear a child who’s in trouble in the water; child drowning is a silent death, with no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.
