Rear-facing car seats

There are several reasons why a young child should be rear-facing in a car seat:

1. Increased safety: Rear-facing car seats provide the best protection for young children in the event of a crash. In a rear-facing position, the car seat cradles the child's head, neck, and spine, distributing the force of the crash more evenly over the child's entire body.

2. Reduced risk of injury: Rear-facing car seats are designed to protect a child's vulnerable neck and spinal cord, which are still developing in young children. In a front-facing car seat, a child's head and neck are more vulnerable to injury in the event of a crash.

3. Law requirement: It is a legal requirement to keep young children in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the weight or height limit for that seat.  If an infant only seat, change to a rear facing convertible seat.  Read your manual for the specific height and weight requirements for that car seat.

4. Expert recommendation: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other child safety organizations recommend keeping children in a rear-facing car seat until at until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer (whichever comes first).  Typically  between 2 & 4 years old.  Check your individual Car Seats.

Overall, keeping a young child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible is the safest option for them in the event of a car crash.
Check the car seat manual and labels on the car seat for weight and height limits.
