Is your child safe?

The Week of the Young Child is an annual event that takes place during the second week of April and celebrates young children, their families, and early childhood educators. The week is organized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is meant to highlight the importance of early learning and development.

Childproofing is an important aspect of creating a safe and supportive environment for young children. During the Week of the Young Child, it is especially important to focus on childproofing in order to ensure that children can explore and play in a safe environment.

Some childproofing tips to consider during the Week of the Young Child include:

1) Install safety gates: Use safety gates to block off areas of the home that may be dangerous for young children, such as stairs or rooms with hazardous materials.

2) Secure furniture: Secure furniture to walls to prevent it from falling on children.

3) Use outlet covers: Cover electrical outlets with outlet covers to prevent children from sticking objects in them.  You never have to remember to cover the outlets if you use a sliding outlet cover.

4) Keep hazardous materials out of reach: Store hazardous materials such as cleaning supplies and medications out of reach of children.

5) Lock up firearms: Keep firearms locked up and out of reach of children.  With the firearm and ammunition in separate area.

6) Install window guards: Install window guards to prevent children from falling out of windows.

7) Keep hot items away from edges: When cooking or using hot appliances, keep hot items away from the edges of counters and tables to prevent children from accidentally grabbing them.  Keep pan handles turned towards the back of the stove to keep from accidently hitting them and little hands reaching for them.

8) Keep children safe around water by installing a pool fence with a self-latching/self-closing gate around your pool.

Childproofing is an ongoing process, as children grow and their abilities change. It's important to regularly evaluate the safety of your home and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the safety of your children.

By taking these steps to childproof the home, parents and caregivers can help prevent accidents and injuries, and ensure that young children can play and explore in a safe and supportive environment.

National Lightning Safety Awareness Week: Childproofing for Lightning Hazards

National Lightning Safety Awareness Week: Childproofing for Lightning Hazards

National Lightning Safety Awareness Week serves as a reminder to protect our children from the potential dangers of lightning strikes. While lightning safety typically focuses on outdoor precautions, it's important to consider childproofing measures inside the home as well. Let's explore key childproofing tips to mitigate lightning hazards and ensure the safety of children during thunderstorms.

Surge protector installation:

Lightning can cause power surges that may damage electronic devices and pose a risk of electric shock. Install surge protectors on electrical outlets and ensure that electronic equipment, such as televisions, computers, and gaming consoles, are connected to them. This helps prevent damage and reduces the risk of electrical hazards during thunderstorms.

Secure heavy furniture:

Secure heavy furniture, such as bookcases, cabinets, or televisions, to the walls to prevent them from toppling over during a lightning-induced power surge or if lightning strikes the house. Use furniture anchors or straps to secure them properly and minimize the risk of injury to children.

Lightning rod and grounding system:

Consider installing a lightning rod and grounding system on your home. Lightning rods provide a path for lightning to follow, directing it safely into the ground, reducing the risk of structural damage and fire. Consult with a professional to ensure proper installation and effectiveness.

Window safety:

Close windows during thunderstorms to minimize the risk of shattered glass caused by lightning strikes. Falling glass fragments can pose a significant hazard to children. Additionally, install window guards or safety film to reinforce the glass and prevent breakage.

Outdoor play safety:

Encourage children to come indoors and suspend outdoor activities at the first sign of thunder or lightning. Create a designated area where children can take shelter, such as a covered porch or a sturdy structure away from trees, open spaces, and bodies of water.

Communication and education:

Educate children about the dangers of lightning and the importance of seeking shelter during thunderstorms. Teach them to recognize signs of an approaching storm, such as darkening skies or distant thunder, and establish clear communication channels to inform them when it's time to go inside.

Emergency preparedness:

Have an emergency preparedness kit readily available, including flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered weather radio, and a first aid kit. Teach children how to use these items and where to find them in case of a power outage or emergency during a thunderstorm.

Stay away from corded devices:

Advise children to avoid using corded devices, such as landline telephones, during thunderstorms. Lightning can travel through telephone lines, posing a risk of electric shock. Encourage the use of cordless devices or cell phones instead.

Lead by example:

As adults, it's important to model safe behavior during thunderstorms. Demonstrate the importance of seeking shelter, following lightning safety guidelines, and prioritizing the well-being of everyone in the household. Children are more likely to adopt safe practices when they see them consistently displayed by trusted adults.

During National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, let's remember to childproof our homes against lightning hazards to ensure the safety of our children. By implementing these childproofing tips, such as surge protector installation, securing heavy furniture, and reinforcing windows, we can mitigate potential risks and create a safer environment during thunderstorms. Together, let's protect our children from lightning-related dangers both inside and outside the home.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Childproofing is an important aspect of preventing brain injuries in children. During Brain Injury Awareness Month, it's a good opportunity to review and implement childproofing tips to keep your child safe and reduce the risk of brain injury. Here are some childproofing tips to consider:

1. Use safety gates: Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent falls.

2. Cover sharp edges: Put padding or edge protectors on sharp furniture corners to reduce the risk of head injury in the event of a fall.

3. Lock up toxic chemicals: Keep hazardous chemicals, such as cleaning products and medicines, out of reach and locked up to prevent accidental poisoning.

4. Secure heavy furniture: Anchor heavy furniture, such as bookcases and televisions, to the wall to prevent them from tipping over and causing injury.

5. Install window guards: Install window guards to prevent children from accidentally falling out of windows.

6. Use safety straps: Attach safety straps to dressers, book shelves, and other furniture to prevent tipping and injury.

7. Check playground equipment: Regularly check playground equipment for any signs of damage or wear, and repair or replace as necessary to ensure it is safe for children to use.

Kidco has a product that protects active babies and toddlers from minor falls called a Noggin Nanny. It has a foam cushion to provide complete head support and a soft, pressure relief design to grow with the child.

The Noggin Nanny is recommended for children 6-24 months old. It has a breathable vented fabric to keep children comfortable. The Noggin Nanny can help parent protect children from banging their head as they begin to explore.

Are You Ready for the Swim Season?

A pool fence is an essential safety feature that helps to prevent drowning accidents, especially for young children.

Installing a mesh pool fence in March is a good idea for several reasons:

1) Summer preparation: March is a great time to start preparing for summer, and installing a mesh pool fence is a key part of pool safety. By installing the fence before the busy summer months, you can ensure that your pool is secure and ready for use when you need it.

2) Increased visibility: Mesh pool fences are designed to be see-through, which can help increase visibility and provide a better view of the pool and surrounding area.

3) Durability: Mesh pool fences are durable and can withstand the elements, making them a great choice for long-term pool safety. They are also easy to maintain, which can save you time and money in the long run.

Installing a mesh pool fence in March is a smart move for pool safety and peace of mind. With warmer temperatures, increased visibility, and durability, a mesh pool fence can help keep children and pets safe and secure while playing outside the pool area.

It is highly recommended to have a 5 foot pool fence (in some areas this is code) in order to provide an extra level of safety.

A 5ft mesh pool fence can be designed to complement the style of your home and landscaping, adding an attractive feature to your outdoor space while providing safety and security for your family.

Ultimately, the height of the pool fence should be determined by local regulations and the specific needs of the pool and its surrounding environment.

When it comes to water safety, it's important to take every precaution to ensure that children are safe and protected. One of the most important things you can do to protect your child while they're swimming is to make sure they are wearing a life jacket that is U.S. Coast Guard certified.

A life jacket that is U.S. Coast Guard certified is designed to meet strict safety standards and provide maximum protection in the water. Life jackets come in a variety of sizes and styles, so it's important to choose one that is appropriate for your child's weight and size.

Young children should wear a life jacket that will keep them up right. Children who are beginning to learn swimming skills can wear a puddle jumper.

In a pool setting, it can be easy to assume that children are safe and under constant supervision. However, accidents can happen in an instant and it's important to have a backup safety measure in case of an emergency. A life jacket can provide the necessary buoyancy and support to keep them afloat.

Stearns has U.S. Coast Guard certified life jackets and you can purchase them on Amazon. Click on one of the photos or one of the links below to purchase on Amazon.

It's important to note that inflatable toys, such as arm floats or inner tubes, should not be used in place of a life jacket. These toys are not designed to provide adequate support and can easily deflate or become detached from a child, putting them at risk.

In addition to ensuring that your child wears a life jacket, it's also important to keep a close eye on them while they're in the water. Children should always be supervised by an adult who is familiar with water safety and knows how to respond in case of an emergency.

By taking these precautions, you can help keep your child safe and protected while they enjoy the fun and excitement of swimming in a pool. Don't take any chances when it comes to water safety - always make sure your child is wearing a U.S. Coast Guard Certified life jacket and is under close supervision at all times.
